Have you ever been in a situation that feels like making you bawl your eyes out? Don’t dull it! I know that knowing your bank’s sort code can be very frustrating especially if you urgently need to complete an online transaction or a paper work and you are required to input your bank sort code.

Imagine this scenario: You are about to receive money or make an online transfer and you were required to provide your bank’s sort code or probably after completing your Industrial Training as a student you were asked to provide your bank details, including your sort code to receive payment. You think wahala don burst be that, abi?

Not to worry your head though. While most people don’t know their bank’s sort code; it’s actually quite easy to get.

What is a Sort Code?

A sort code helps determine and trace the source of an account i.e. the branch and location of an account number where funds needs to be directed especially in situations where e-payments/transactions need to be carried out.

The Sort Code of a Nigerian bank is a way of identifying a particular bank when making transfers between banks.

It is also used when making an international transactions. They are also a medium of exchanging communication between these banks.

Facts You Should Know About Sort Codes

  • The sort code is a 9 digit number, the first 3 are the bank’s code, the next is the location and the last 5 digits are for the branch.
  • No two bank branches can ever have the same sort code. Therefore, asking for your friend’s or families’ sort code is pretty much a waste of time.

 

Where To Find Your Bank’s Sort Code

The Sort Code is printed at the bottom of every single check leaf, the middle set of characters on the MICR line i.e the set of numbers at the middle is the sort code. The first set of numbers is the cheque number, the second set of numbers is the sort code and the third set of numbers on the right is normally the account number.
