What Is SWIFT Code?

SWIFT code is a unique standard format to identify a particular bank or financial institution. SWIFT code is also commonly called BIC which stand for business identifier code.

The acronym SWIFT stands for “Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication”.

The terms SWIFT codes and BIC codes are terms that are usually use interchangeably. Other terms used by banks overseas include:

• BSC (Bank Sort Code)
• CHIPS (Clearing House Inter-Bank Payment System) – US and Canada only
• IFSC (Indian Financial System Code)
• NCC (National Clearing Code)

How SWIFT Codes Are Formed

SWIFT codes are either 8 or 11 characters long. When the 8-digits code is given, it refers to the primary or head office of the bank or financial institution but if its the 11-digits code that is given it refers to the specific branch.

The SWIFT code is formatted as shown below;

• The first 4 characters represent the bank code (only letters)
• The next 2 characters represent the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country code (only letters)
• The next 2 characters represent the location code (letters and digits)
• The last 3 characters represent the branch code (this is optional).
  Note that for most transactions you can use the 8-digits swift code which is the swift code for the primary or head office.

Difference Between Bank Sort Code And SWIFT Code

Although both SWIFT and sort code are use to identify a bank, their difference lies primarily in their usage. While SWIFT code is use mostly to identify a bank’s primary or head office in international transactions, sort code is use primarily to identify a specific bank branch in local transactions.

Also, SWIFT codes are typically 8 or 11 characters long and are alphanumeric; that is it can contain both numbers and letters. In contrast, sort codes are 6 characters long and strictly contain numbers only.

In summary the differences between SWIFT code and sort code are outlined below;

1. SWIFT codes are used globally for international transfers while Sort codes are used only locally for transfers within the country.
2. SWIFT codes are typically 8 or 11 characters long while sort codes are 6 characters long.
3. SWIFT codes are alphanumeric while sort codes are purely numeric.
