At one time or the other, I’m sure you must have been required to input your country or state’s Zip/Postal codes, especially when filling an online form for international transactions, registration or application, sorting mails or delivery of packages.

Zip code is always a required field when filling job application forms or any other form online. Many people make the mistake of filling 234 as Nigeria’s Zip code. This is a big NO-NO!

ZIP (Zone Improvement Plan) codes is applicable to the United States only. 234  is actually Nigeria’s international dialing code. While USA adopts the term “zip code”, other countries including Nigeria call theirs “postal code”.

The code serves the same function in different both US and non-US states.Hence,do not make the mistake of inputing Nigeria’s dialing code rather than her correct official Zip code which is 110001.

Summarily, whenever you are asked to provide  Nigeria’s zip code,  110001 is what is required and not +234. Although, 23401 and 00176 might also be applicable.

What is Zip Code?

Zone Improvement Plan codes is a system of postal codes used by the US Postal Service since the early 1960s. Zip codes are used for faster sorting of mail and delivery. Originally they consisted of five digits. However, the  1980ssaw these codes expanded to nine digits, which are written with a hyphen – XXXXX-YYYY. For instance, 25436-7543.

The US Postal Service began to use postal codes in large cities back in 1943 when the postal address was recorded like the sample given below:

The number 18 in the address indicates the total number of  postal districts within the city limits. By the early 1960s, there was a need for a more comprehensive system of postal codes.

A new system was adopted in a test adopted throughout the United States on July 1, 1963. The origin of Zip codes is credited toRobert Moon – a postal worker. It was Moon who proposed a new index system back in 1944 when he worked as a postal inspector.

What is Nigerian Zip Code?

The Nigeria zip code is 110001, while 00176 is actually the country’s postal code. This is the case in several other countries across the world.

Nigeria’s postal code as used in Nigeria comes with various names such asEIRCODE, PIN CODE, ZIP CODE, POST CODE, amongst others .They all mean the same thing!

To make accessing it easier for you, you can have it on your phone, laptop or desktop; as a text file and just copy it any time you need zip/postal codes for any of the 36 states in Nigeria.

Zip Code means Z= Zone, I= Improvement, P= Plan Code.

Nigeria postal codes are numeric, 6-digits in number. The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST ) divided Nigeria into nine regions. Therefore, numbers allocated to each region, makes up the first digit of its Postal code, the first 3 digits of the code (the second and the third digits combined with the first) are the dispatch district for outgoing sorting and the last three digits are for various post office in each regions for delivery.

A delivery location can be any of the following; a post office facility, a rural area, or an urban area.

The main postal head office in each region will have a postal code ending in 0001. Therefore, Garki Main HO in Abuja has the postal code 900001, Ikeja HO inLagos has 100001, Lokoja in Kogi has 270001 and Port Harcourt has 500001. The lowest postcode is 100001 and the highest is 982002.
